Education on recycling centre - Script/ Reminders
IMPORTANT: Please notify your teacher that you will be making this presentation ahead of time, unless you have a spare.
Presentation Visuals: Make sure you pick them up (located in the green bin, around where the recycling pick-up bin is) from the Geography Office before your visit.
Introduction
1. Make sure you introduce yourself and tell them you’re from BEAT and the Waste Reduction Committee.
2. Inform them about the Recycling Centre in the cafeteria: clarify where it is (close to the music wing doors; against the wall)
What do the designated bins in the cafeteria collect?
1. Printer Cartridges: Both Ink and Laser
2. Eyeglasses: It is being sent to poor countries
3. Wine Corks: The Bag-A-Cork Program recycles them into new products
4. Pop tabs: For wheelchairs ad handicapped people; sent to March of Dimes
5. Used Postage Stamps: It is being sent to Lucy McCormick School and is used by students with developmental disabilities to make into magnets that are being sold to raise funds
6. Greeting Cards: Both NEW & OLD. It is being sent to elementary schools to use for craft programs
7. Plastic Tabs from Bread Bags: It is being sent to elementary schools for counting and sorting activities
8. Used Batteries: THIS IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS TO THE ENVIRONMENT! It shouldn’t be disposed in household garbage; give it to us and we will ensure it gets to the City of Toronto Hazardous Waste Depot
9. Bottle & Cans: Collected everywhere - DO NOT DISPOSE IT IN THE GARBAGE
10. CDs & DVDs: Used for Grade 10 Applied Science Experiments
11. Milk Bags: It will be sent to an organization which will use the milk bags to create sleeping mats
12. Old Cell Phones
*Eat It Up, Drink It Up
Everyone should try to finish their lunch to the best of their ability. If the lunch isn’t finished, it would be better to take it home and COMPOST it, instead of throwing it all in the GARBAGE at school. A composting program is in the works at Bethune, but hasn’t happened yet.
*Liquid Contamination!!!
Please do NOT put anything with liquids still in it in the recycling bin! Empty your cups, cans or bottles out before recycling them, because otherwise, they may contaminate other material in the recycling bin.
**NEW (2012-2013)
Plastic Clamshells are now recyclable all across Toronto!
Conclusion
1. Conclude with a quote: Like what Dr. Seuss says: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.”
2. Encourage them to join BEAT in January/February. Emphasize that we are an awesome group!
3. Thank the students and teachers for their time!
